The Conference
Who?
Medienhaus Wien is pleased to host the 2010 conference on the future of journalism in Vienna as partner of the leading Swiss journalism school maz – Die Schweizer Journalistenschule and the European Journalism Observatory (Università della Svizzera italiana).
The idea behind the conference is to gather a small group of outstanding editors, media journalists, media managers and communication researchers from Europe and the U.S. and to create a truly unique opportunity for intellectual exchange and lively discussion in an intimate atmosphere.
The event will take place for the 5th time in 2010, for the first time in Vienna.
When and Where?
“Journalism 2020″ will take place on 19th and 20th of March in Vienna, Austria, in the Presseclub Concordia in the historic centre of Vienna (“Concordia” is the Austrian Journalists and Writers Club – this year celebrating its 150th anniversary).
Why?
Media houses are in deep crisis. While web penetration is high and internet usage still growing, audiences for traditional media are shrinking. Not only among the young, but among all age groups. Users read, listen, watch and eventually produce news online, choosing among a huge offer on different types of platforms. Traditional journalism struggles for attention as it has lost its monopoly in producing news. We are moving towards an “On demand news culture”.
On demand – and for free. Web-Users are not (yet) ready to pay for content. At the same time revenues from ads and classifieds in traditional media are shrinking dramatically. Online advertising is increasing – but Google and other players like Facebook or Youtube are benefitting from it much more than traditional media companies. Advertising is decoupling from journalism. Customary business models don’t work out any longer.
What is the impact of these developments on journalism? Will there still be journalism as we know it in 2020? Do we even need it, and if so, how can we regain its credibility and maintain its professionalism?
What?
The participants – media practitioners and researchers from various European countries and from the U.S. - will discuss these questions and strategies to ensure well-resourced news coverage, providing the public with reliable information indispensable for democracy.
The panel discussion on the 18th is open to the interested public – though a registration via e-mail (see opening) is required. Please note, that the conference on 19th and 20th is for invited and registered participants only!
